Carols in the park

Cessnock City Council runs Carols in the Park at Cessnock Sportsground in early December, with live music, food and fireworks; in past years it has been a free family evening. The 2026 date had not been announced when we checked; we will add it here when the council lists it.

The Christmas lights

The Christmas Lights Spectacular at Hunter Valley Gardens, Pokolbin, runs from Friday 30 October 2026 to Sunday 31 January 2027. The gardens list the lights as open from 5:30pm to 10:30pm (last entry 9:30pm), with rides from 6pm. It is a light show rather than a performance, but it is the Hunter's biggest Christmas outing and pairs well with an evening show.

Planning a Christmas outing in the Hunter

December is a busy month in the Hunter, with Christmas shows, carols, lights displays and markets competing with end-of-year parties and wine country visitors. Book theatre and lights tickets early, especially for weekend and school holiday dates, and check whether evening events sell out. For outdoor carols, arrive early for a good spot on the grass, bring a picnic rug or low chairs, insect repellent, water and a torch, and check whether glass and alcohol are allowed. Summer storms can roll in quickly, so watch the forecast and the organiser's page for updates.

Christmas with kids

Many Christmas events suit families: carols in the park with children's performers, lights displays with walk-through trails, and Christmas shows aimed at young audiences. Check age guidance and running times, plan for late finishes at evening events, and bring snacks and a jumper for when the evening cools. See our childrens theatre guide for shows suited to different ages.

Getting there and home

Hunter Valley venues are spread out, and public transport in the evenings is limited. If you plan to drink at a winery or event, organise a designated driver, a taxi or rideshare booked ahead, or a shuttle where the event provides one. Allow extra time for traffic and parking at popular lights displays.

Christmas shows in theatres

Theatres in Newcastle and Cessnock usually program Christmas concerts, tribute shows and family shows in November and December. The listings on this page link to each venue's own page for dates and tickets; check there for the latest times, because programs change.

Christmas markets and late shopping

Many Hunter towns hold Christmas markets and late-night shopping in December, with local makers, food and music. They are a good way to combine gift shopping with an evening out before a show or carols.

Christmas lights in the Hunter

The large lights displays in the Hunter Valley usually run from November into January on set nights, with timed entry and tickets bought ahead. Smaller suburban lights trails and street displays appear in many towns, often with gold coin donations to charity. Visit on a weeknight if you can, when crowds are smaller, and arrive at dusk to see the lights come on.

Carols by candlelight

Community carols are held in parks, showgrounds and churches across the region, usually in the weeks before Christmas. Many are free, run by councils, churches or service clubs, with local choirs, school groups and a visit from Santa. Candles or glow sticks are often sold on the night to raise funds.

A Christmas week in the Hunter

A simple plan for a festive week: a Christmas show at a theatre early in the week, a lights display on a weeknight, community carols at the weekend, and a market for last-minute gifts. Book the ticketed events first, then fit the free events around them. Check each organiser's page close to the date, because outdoor events can move or cancel in bad weather.

Our short answer

Christmas in the Hunter Valley brings ticketed Christmas shows in Newcastle and Cessnock theatres, a large lights display in the vineyards, free community carols across the region and Christmas markets. Book shows and lights early, plan transport, and check outdoor events on the day.

Christmas in the vineyards

Many Hunter Valley wineries and restaurants run Christmas lunches, festive tastings and end-of-year events through December. They book out early, especially on weekends and Christmas week. Combine a daytime winery visit with an evening at the lights or carols, but plan transport, because distances between venues are long and evening transport is limited. Check opening hours over Christmas and New Year, as some cellar doors close on public holidays.

Gifts from the Hunter

Show tickets and theatre gift vouchers make good Christmas presents for family and friends who love live performance. Many venues sell gift vouchers through their box offices, valid for future shows.

Christmas on a budget

Many of the best Hunter Christmas experiences cost little or nothing: community carols in the park, free street lights trails, church nativity plays and school concerts open to families, and Christmas markets with free entertainment. Pack a picnic dinner for the carols, take a drive past the best-lit streets, and save the ticketed shows for one special night out. Check council websites for free community events in your area, which are often listed only a few weeks ahead.

Christmas shows for adults

Not every Christmas show is for children. Tribute concerts, cabaret, choirs and comedy fill the theatres in December, and many make an easy end-of-year night out with friends or colleagues. Check the listing for the style of show, running time and any age guidance before booking.
